The Danzig authorities today served an ultimatum on the Jewish community declaring that the first 1,000 of the 4,000 Jews in the Free City must emigrate “before the end of January” or face “serious consequences.”
News of the ultimatum reached Jewish relief organizations in Paris together with an urgent appeal for at least $150,000 which the community declared was necessary to cope with the problem. It was understood that Danzig Jewish leaders would be held personally responsible for emigration of the 1,000 Jews. The action was taken despite the reaching of an agreement recently with the Danzig authorities for the gradual emigration of the Jews to be completed by the end of 1939.
