Samuel H. Daroff of Philadelphia, noted philanthropist, civic and Zionist leader, has agreed to serve as national chairman for the observance of the 15th anniversary of Israel’s Independence Day sponsored by the American Zionist Council, coordinating body of all Zionist organizations in this country, according to an announcement today by Rabbi Irving Miller, chairman of the Council.
The membership of the national anniversary committee headed by Mr. Daroff will comprise leading figures in all walks of life from various parts of the country. The anniversary celebrations in this country will be ushered in by a gala concert festival and cultural program to be held on Sunday evening, April 28, on the eve of Israel’s Independence Day at the Philharmonic Hall in the newly built Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City. Similar celebrations are scheduled to be held the same evening in other major American communities across the country.
Making public the selection of Mr. Daroff as head of the nationwide celebrations under united Zionist auspices, Rabbi Miller paid warm tribute to Mr. Daroff’s “extraordinary contributions in the efforts for the creation of the State and the development of the State of Israel since its establishment 15 years ago.” Mr. Daroff is the recipient of high awards from the Israel Bonds, United Jewish Appeal and for services to our country from the American Legion, Jewish War Veterans, and numerous civic organizations as well as Jewish religious and educational institutions. In recognition of Mr. Daroff’s services a colony was established in his name in 1951 by the Jewish National Fund of Philadelphia.
