David Shapiro, publisher of The Day, died yesterday of a cerebral hemorrhage at his home here at 262 Central Park West. He was 68. Funeral services for the publisher, who died during his sleep, will be held tomorrow morning in the Riverside Chapel. Burial will be in Mt. Lebanon cemetery.
Shapiro was born in Russian Poland, the son of Joseph and Nachama Shapiro, and came to this country at the age of 17. On the prompting of Dr. J.L. Magnes, now Chancellor of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, and other Jewish leaders, Shapiro in 1914 founded The Day.
The publisher was founder and treasurer of the Brooklyn Jewish Center, a trustee of the Brooklyn Hebrew Orphan Asylum and a contributor to the United Jewish Appeal, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the American Jewish Congress. He leaves a widow, Mrs. Anne Danish Shapiro, and six children by his first marriage.
