A $2,500 gift by the Davison Fund established by John D. Rockefeller, Jr. to the Brooklyn Federation of Jewish Charities was reported yesterday by Samuel Salzman, chairman of the trade and membership council, chief fund-raising body of the Federation.
The report, which was made to Supreme Court Justice Mitchell May, president of the Federation, urged continued support of its twenty-five agencies through the Summer months “when the seasonal decrease in income is likely to be alarmingly disproportionate to the need, which is undiminished.”
Ninety-three trades and professions have participated in the Federation’s fund-raising activities this year, Mr. Salzman stated. The total funds raised to date amount to $314,069.94, it was reported. Of this total, the women’s division raised $27,049.76, and the Junior Federation, $15,000.
“There is every reason to believe that the majority of Federation supporters will not slacken their support during the Summer months,” Mr. Salzman informed Justice May. “The needy must be given care and service in the summer-time as well as at any other time of the year.”
Dr. Joseph J. Schwartz, executive director of the Federation, reported that “a number of our agencies find their burdens heavier because of the season. Special services must be provided to residents in many of the congested quarters of Brooklyn where the majority of our twenty-five agencies operate.”
