The convening of an All-American-Jewish-Conference “for the cool and deliberate discussion of the realities of Jewish life and of the message of hope which Zionism has for Jewry in this country” was advocated by Jacob de Haas, veteran Zionist and distinguished journalist, in an address delivered last night under the auspices of the Zionist Forum.
Defining Zionism as “the one attempt the Jews have made to recognize their abnormal position in the world and to end it by creating a normal existence,” Mr. de Haas recommended “the throwing overboard of all these meaningless syntheses and the resumption by Zionists of a clear national attitude.” “This,” he said, “would be in the interest of the Jewish people and not out of a desire for party power or glory.”
“I emphasize,” he added, “cool and deliberate discussion. I would stress the bringing together of the local representatives of the three thousand Jewish communities of the country. I see no purpose in bringing together a ‘yes-man’ gathering, or in lending aid to one of those publicity stunts, which sicken most of us, have worked incalculable mischief on our morale, and are merely excuses for money raising.”
Funeral services were held yesterday at the Riverside Memorial Chapel for Alexander Lehman, former Assistant District Attorney, who succumbed to heart disease at the age of sixty.
He was active in the Hebrew Big Brothers Association.
