The Near East and India, semi-official organ of the Colonial Office, publishes today an article by Jacob de Haas, well known American Zionist leader, opposing Col. Wedgwood’s suggestion that Palestine be converted into a crown colony.
“I reluctantly oppose so good a Zionist as Col. Josiah Wedgwood on the proposition that Palestine be converted into a British crown colony,” Mr. de Haas writes. “I studied the administrative methods on the spot in 1924-25, and concluded that the cause of the muddle then prevailing was that Palestine was being treated as a crown colony and operated under the crown procedure.”
Discussing the practical problem, Mr. de Haas points out that the Jews and Arabs are not “natives” and that the force of the crown colony system is to deprive the country of the practical cooperation of men who have a stake in it.
