Karl Chmielewski, former commander of a branch of the infamous Mauthausen concentration camp, will go on trial here early in 1961, on charges of having murdered at least 100 persons, the local Jury Court announced here today.
Although Chmielewsky is charged with 100 deaths, evidence in the hands of the prosecutor was officially said today to show that he had killed at least 1,000 persons. The 56-year-old former SS leader was the “inventor” of the “death-bath” method, whereby camp victims were drowned or frozen to death by being immersed in cold water during the winter months. Herbert Junge, a former concentration camp prisoner and “Kapo,” will go on trial with Chmielewski as a co-defendant.
