Mr. C. P. Scott, former editor and since his retirement in 1929 Governing Director of the “Manchester Guardian”, died early this morning at his home in Manchester, at the age of 85.
Mr. Scott with Mr. Herbert Sidebotham, who was then on the “Manchester Guardian”, and other non-Jewish friends in Manchester of the Zionist movement, was one of the founders in Manchester in 1916 of the British Palestine Committee, formed to further the establishment of a Jewish Commonwealth in Palestine as a British dominion. The Committee published an organ, “Palestine”, first in Manchester and then in London, until 1924, supplying its public with valuable information on all matters relating to Palestine.
Mr. Nahum Sokolov in his “History of Zionism” writes: The name of the doyen of English journalism, Mr. C. P. Scott, editor of the “Manchester Guardian”, may be especially mentioned. Since the very beginning, Mr. C. P. Scott has given the whole problem a very careful and sympathetic attention and was an influential mediator between Zionists and leaders of British politics. He and Dr. Weizmann had conversations with some personalities who strengthened them in their hopes that the situation was favourable for Zionism.
