Dedicate Henry Cohen Center in Galveston

The citizenship of Galveston and the state of Texas paid its honors, yesterday to Dr. Henry Cohen, Rabbi of Temple B’nai Israel for more than forty years in the dedication of the Henry Cohen Community House erected by members of his congregation. Catholic priests Protestant ministers and colleagues from other cities united with the laity in expressing appreciation of the humanitarian and cultural services of Dr. Cohen, not only to the Jews of Galveston but the Jews of Texas and the nation.

Dr. Henry Ettlinger, Professor of Mathematics of the University of Texas, confered upon Dr. Cohen the title of “Master architect of human souls” in his address. Adrian F. Levy termed him the “outstanding Rabbi of the United States.” Rev. Marius Chataignon, Rector of Sacred Heart Church brought the felicitations of the members of his church. J. K. Hexter of Dallas, Rabbi Henry Barnston of Houston, Rabbi Ephraim Frisch of San Antonio, were among the speakers. I. H. Kempner presided.

John Neethe, vice president of the congregation, presented Dr. Cohen. The key of the Community House was given to Robert Cohen, president of congregation.

“Assurance for the perpetuation of Judaism for the generations of the future was given by the erection of the Henry Cohen Community House” declared Dr. Cohen. He expressed appreciation for the loyalty and service of his congregation.

Rev. H. J. Horowitz of the Orthodox Congregation delivered the invocation and Rev. J. F. Sarner of the Seamen’s Bethel the benediction.

EULOGIZE COL. GUINZBURG AT FUNERAL SERVICES

Dr. H. G. Enelow, Rabbi of Temple Emanu-El, and Dr. Solomon Lowenstein, executive director of the New York Federation for the Support of Jewish Philanthropic Societies, paid tribute to the late Col. Henry A. Guinzburg, philanthropist, at funeral services held at the Temple Sunday.

Tribute was paid to Colonel Guinzburg for his work as Treasurer of the Federation during the last eight years and for his lifelong charitable activities. His interest in the affairs of the city, State and nation was also cited. His life, the speakers said, might well serve as a model.

Among those at the funeral were Colonel Guinzburg’s associate in charitable work and men who had been associated with him in the I. B. Kleinert Company, of which he was Vice-President and Treasurer upon his retirement.

The honorary pallbearers were Felix M. Warburg, Arthur Lehman, Joseph Buttenweiser, Paul Baerwald, Solomon M. Stroock, Louis Marshall, John Williams, Dr. Lee K. Frankel, Walter Beer, Cyrus L. Sulzberger, William Golden, Edward Peyser and Bernard Gorman.
