A small Orthodox synagogue to serve the needs of about 30 Jewish families transferred from the old Foehrenwald displaced persons camp to a housing development here, was dedicated today in the suburb of Passig.
The families had refused to vacate the camp until they were promised an Orthodox house of worship and a ritual bath. The synagogue was built largely with German Government funds and a contribution from the American Joint Distribution Committee.
Today, an official of the Bavarian Ministry for Labor and Social Welfare handed over the keys to the synagogue to the members of the congregation. A dedicatory sermon was delivered by this city’s new chief rabbi, Dr. Adoniyahu Kraus. There are still about 400 Jewish DP’s left in Foehrenwald because the City of Frankfurt has not yet carried out its promise to absorb them.
