The Defense Ministry acted today to spearhead a wide ranging energy conservation program aimed at saving fuel that will take effect nationally later this year. Defense Minister Ezer Weizman issued orders for an immediate eight percent reduction in the use of fuel by the defense establishment. Chief of Staff Gen. Raphael Eytan will issue direct instructions to all military units. The director general of the Defense Ministry will supervise the implementation of these instructions at all ministry establishments.
Energy-saving measures will also be instituted by the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure Daylight saving time will be introduced in April. The ministry is expected to issue orders banning the use of private motor vehicles one day a week. The most drastic measure planned is a steep hike in the already high price of gasoline which is expected to give motorists pause before taking unnecessary trips.
