More than five hundred delegates of fraternal and industrial organizations participated in a conference Sunday at Temple Emanu-1, New York. A resolution to devote themselves and their organizations “arduously to the task of strengthening, and at the same time widening the base of the Federation for the Support of Jewish Philanthropic Societies,” was unanimously passed. It was submitted by Morris Finestone, Secretary of the United Hebrew Trades.
Sol M. Stroock, former president of the Federation, was chairman. He declared that justice was the watchword of the Jews throughout the ages. “Every Jewish man, woman and child,” he said, “belongs to our Federation whether he contributes or not. Membership in Federation is automatic for all Jews in the community. Every Jew must avail himself of the privilege of registering his membership by material support.”
Among the speakers who addressed the conference were Judge Otto A. Rosalsky, chairman of the Jewish Communal Survey; Jonah J. Goldstein, chairman of the New York District of the Zionist Organization of America and trustee of the Federation; Henry Hyman, grandmaster of the Independent Order Free Sons of Israel; Morris Finestone; Judge Jacob Panken, who voiced endorsement of the federation by the Workmen’s Circle; former Congressman Nathan D. Perlman, Grand Master of the Independent Order Brith Abraham; Loney Haskell for the Jewish Theatrical Guild; Judge Gustave Hartman, former Grand Master of the Independent Order Brith Abraham; Joel Krone, Harold A. Lebair and Dr. Nathan Krass, rabbi of Congregation Emanu-El.
