A joint delegation representing the Histadruth, the Hechalutz and the Palestine Labor Political Committee today visited Soviet Ambassador Ivan Maisky and presented to him a check for $40,000 collected among the Jewish workers in Palestine for the Russian Army.
Led by Berl Locker, a Histadruth leader, the delegation asked Ambassador Maisky to convey to the Government and people of Russia “a message of solidarity from the Jewish workers in Palestine who are watching with feelings of sympathy, hope and pride the epic struggle of the Soviet armies.” The delegation stressed that “the fate of small Palestine is conditioned upon the fate of the world outside.” A Nazi invasion of Palestine would spell the annihilation of the Yishuv and jeopardize the national hopes, Mr. Locker, speaking for the delegation, stated.
Referring to the conference of the League to Aid Russia which is now taking place in Palestine with Soviet diplomats in attendance, Mr. Locker, when presenting the check to Maisky, said: “This modest gift is an expression of the feelings of hope on the part of the Jewish workers in Palestine that victory will strengthen the bonds of friendship and brotherhood now forged between them and the peoples of the USSR, including its Jewish citizens.” It is understood that the $40,000 will be used to purchase two sets of sterilizing equipment for the Russian Red Cross. The apparatus will carry inscriptions in Russian, Yiddish and Hebrew.
