Governor Nels on Rockefeller had before him today legislation proposed by the American Jewish Congress calling for exemption of Sabbath observers from the State law prohibiting the opening of business establishments on Sundays.
The proposal, one of six dealing with civil rights and liberties, was presented yesterday by a 200-member delegation of the AJC which visited the Governor, other State officials and leading members of both Houses of the State Legislature. Former Deputy Mayow Stanley Lowell of New York, chairman of the AJC’s New York Metropolitan Council, led the delegation. The delegation held a luncheon here, and was addressed by the Governor, Secretary of State Caroline K. Simon, and Rabbi David Golovensky, president of the New York Board of Rabbis.
