The State Department and the Pentagon disagreed today with Israeli Information Minister Aharon Yariv’s statement that Israel has been assured by the United States of “an important additional amount of arms.” State Department spokesman Paul Hare said no change has taken place in U.S. arms deliveries and described reports that they are being increased as “not accurate.” Hare said “there has been no such speedup.”
A Pentagon spokesman said “it is clear nothing happened last week” when Defense Secretary James Schlesinger met with Israeli Ambassador Simcha Dinitz. Schlesinger himself said Tuesday night that “no dramatic change” has taken place “in the historical supply relationship with Israel with respect to military equipment.”
