Following the investigation made into the disastrous fire which destroyed the township of Slupia-Nova on October 3, an official statement has been issued denying allegations that the fire was caused by the explosion of stores of munitions hidden in the synagogue by local Jewish Communists. The allegation, which caused widespread indignation in Polish Jewry, was first published in the Cracow “Illustrowany Kuryer Codzienny.” and was repeated in many other papers in Poland and abroad.
The fire destroyed two synagogues and 70 houses. A number of people were burned to death. The Jewish population suffered about eighty percent, of the damage caused in the town.
