The State Department late today announced that ##e United States Government was “for the present” discontinuing the licensing of ##ms to the “troubled areas” of the Middle East.
The Department also announced that it is considering steps to protect the ##ves and property of Americans living in the Middle East “in view of the disturb##nces which have occurred” in that area. “We have advised our missions in the area ## be alert for any dangers that might threaten the lives or property of American ??tizens,” a Department spokesman said. “We have also advised our personnel that they should refrain from any acts that might be considered provocative or from ??aking unnecessary risks. We have emphasized that it is the duty of the governments ??o which they are accredited to protect them.”
There are approximately 10,000 Americans in the Middle East, it was esti-##ated. Of them, 4,200 are in Palestine, most of them Jews.
