Deputy Mayor Yisrael Gottlieb of B’nei Brak, a key prosecution witness in the bribery trial of Religious Affairs Minister Aharon Abu-Hatzeira, was attacked and severely injured in his office in the town hall Sunday morning. Police said he was struck on the head by a blunt instrument wielded by a man in “the usual black garb of an ultra-Orthodox Jew.” Gottlieb was hospitalized for treatment of lacerations and later went to the police station where he identified his assailant as a diamond polisher employed by Shmuel Daskal, one of Abu-Hatzeira’s co-defendants. The suspect was picked up by the police shortly after the assault.
