A detailed analysis of what CURRENT HISTORY describes “Soviet Russians Grim Battle Against Religion” appears in the July issue of this magazine. The writer of this article is Louis Fischer, correspondent in Russia of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency and of “The New York Evening Post”.
Mr. Fischer traces the anti-religious movement to basic Communist principles which declare that Communism is incompatible with religious faith. After showing how religion is mocked by Russian Communists, and church leaders punished as counter-revolutionists, and how the church had been shorn of all social functions, Mr. Fischer stresses that the government leaves it to non-official organizations to eradicate the “prejudices, superstitions and beliefs”. while itself maintaining an avowdly neutral though benevolent attitude towards anti-religious campaigns.
