Despite the fact that the family of the Minister of the Interior was present in the National Theatre here during the performance of the drama “The Grand Lady” by the Jewish author, Szomory, anti-Semitic demonstrants threw stink-bombs into the audience. Shouting “Down with the Jews; down with the government. Go to Palestine. Long live pogroms!” the demonstrants stormed the theatre.
Many persons, including the policemen who tried to quell the riot, were injured during the encounters. The police were compelled to draw sabres in curbing the demonstrants. When they had been compelled to leave the theatre, the rioters staged a demonstration in the vicinity of the theatre. The excesses lasted until midnight when the police succeeded in putting down the disorders. Ninety persons were arrested, including editors of anti-Semitic papers.
The drama, “The Grand Lady” by Summary has as its heroine the Empress Marie Therese. A revival of the piece is being staged at the theatre.
While the outbreak was being staged at the National Theatre anti-Semitic circles held meetings to prepare plans to fight the proposed liberalization of the numerous classes law. Many students in the provincial cities are being organized for procest demonstrations.
