A strong resolution opposing the Arab boycott against Israel, calling for “dedication” to “principles of unrestricted, free, international trade,” was adopted here by the Greater Detroit Board of Trade. Among other clauses, the measure cited a resolution adopted almost a year ago by the Detroit Common Council, which opposed the anti-Israel boycott by declaring that. “The State of Israel is one of the United States’ staunchest and firmest friends in the Near East,” and that “the State of Israel is a bastion of democracy in the Near East and is dependent on commerce and industry to continue its growth and survival.”
The resolution had been prepared on behalf of the Board of Trade foreign affairs committee by Norman Birkrant, a Detroit attorney who is consul in this city for Austria. It declared as part of the Board’s “official policy” a request that members” engaged in the export of articles, materials, supplies or information” refuse “to take any action, including the furnishing of information or the signing of agreements, or the issuing of negative documents of origin which have the effect of furthering or supporting the restrictive trade practices or boycotts imposed or fostered by any foreign country against any other foreign country friendly to the United States.”
