The Detroit Public Library has accepted from the Jewish Historical Society of Michigan the Jewish Welfare Federation Archives, rated the most important collection of historical source material on Michigan Jewry.
The archives have been formally presented to the library’s Burton Historical Collection for cataloguing and safekeeping. The records will then be available for historical research and administrative use. The books and papers include material dating from 1899, when the United Jewish Charities was formed, through 1926, marking creation of the Federation, up to 1950.
Participating in the presentation were Hyman Safran, Federation president, William Avrunin, Federation executive director, Dr. Irving I. Edgar, president of the Jewish Historical Society, Allen A. Warsen, honorary president, and James M. Babcock, chief of the Burton Historical Collection.
