Leaders of the Allied Jewish Campaign here predicted today that this year’s drive will reach the peak figure of $5,000,000 for the first time since 1957.
At the first, large fund-raising gathering here this year, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Hamburger, a total of $2,405,745 was contributed to the campaign “kick-off.” According to William Avrunin, executive director of the Jewish Welfare Federation here, and director of the drive, the last time Detroit Jewry had given more than $5,000,000 in one year’s campaign was in 1957, when the total reached $5,900,000.
Last year, Mr. Avrunin said, the big givers’ rally corresponding to this year’s had raised $1,664,390–by comparison with this year’s initial $2,405,745. At the rally, addresses were delivered by Max M. Fisher, national chairman of the United Jewish Appeal; Mr. Hamburger; Al Borman, honorary chairman of this year’s drive; Sol Eisenberg, co-chairman; and Rabbi Arthur J. Lelyveld, of Cleveland.
