Bernard S. Deutsch, New York’s anti-lottery President of the Board of Aldermen and Jewry’s anti-Nazi president of the American Jewish Congress, will celebrate his fiftieth birthday today. He will celebrate his natal day by getting to work in the Aldermanic Chamber “bright and early” and “remaining on the job all day.”
“The affairs of the city,” he told reporters yesterday, “are far too pressing to admit of birthday celebrations.”
The day, however, will not pass without proper celebration. Mr. Deutsch said that he understood some of his friends were planning a little dinner and theatre party for the evening. But of the plans he knew nothing.
Nor did he seem to know of the plans of the Aldermanic staff to hold an informal reception at 4:30 p. m. for their “chief,” a celebration shrouded with much secrecy.
