a symposium on the future development of the Negev was held at Sdeh Boker, settlement where retired Premier Ben Gurion now lives, under the chairmanship of Mr. Ben Gurion. Among the participants in the discussions were Dov Joseph, Minister for Development, and high officials of the government, Jewish Agency and the Negev Development Authority.
Mr. Ben Gurion and a number of other leaders favored development of the Negev on the basis of local resources, including the raising of cattle on large range areas. Water experts, however, pressed the point that the desert area should be irrigated with water resources from the north and farmed intensively.
