District Attorney Thomas E. Dewey last night urged support of the Jewish homeland in Palestine as “another frontier of democracy,” addressing members of some 1,000 communal and fraternal organizations with an aggregate membership of 475,000 at a rally of the Council of Organizations for Palestine at Cooper Union.
“Tell the Jews of this country that when they help Palestine they help the cause of human freedom,” Dewey said. “Tell them that the vast majority of Americans favor all out aid to the struggling democracies. Tell them that Palestine, like England is another frontier of democracy. Let them reckon with pride the 8,000 Jews from Palestine in the British army, of whom 1,500 are in the Royal Air Force.”
Judge Morris Rothenberg, asking aid for the United Palestine Appeal drive, which is now part of the United Jewish Appeal, said “Palestine is now linked with Britain in the first line of defense.” Other speakers included Maxa Nordau and leaders of local Jewish organizations.
