The opinion that on the question of the compatibility of Liberal Judaism and Zionism the anti-Zionist Liberals are more consistent than the Zionist Liberals is expressed by the “Jewish Daily News,” orthodox daily of New York. Writing editorially in its issue of July 14 on the International Conference of Liberal Jews, the paper observes:
“On the question of Zionism and Reform Judaism there is no doubt that the position of Rabbi Mattuck and Claude Montefore is more consistent than that of the Reform Rabbis who are also Zionists. Reform and Zionism are two contrasts excluding one another. Reform aims to uproot the idea of Jewish nationalism. One of the chief purposes of Reform was to convince the world that the Jews are not a nation. Reform has always propagated the belief that the Jewish national has ceased to exist and that there is no need for the Jews to have their own land. The Jews according to Reform, are a religious sect. Reform as a movement, as a group, as whatever you will, is opposed to Zionism and Zionists as a group are opposed to Reform.”
The “Jewish Daily News” further declares its belief that the chief result of the London Liberal Conference will be a clearer demarcation between Liberal Judaism and Orthodoxy in Great Britain than has hitherto existed.
“The Conference will help toward making the divisions in British Jewry sharper and clear so that it will resemble the divisions that have been worked out in American Jewry. Up till now there has not been in England a separate Reform and a separate Orthodoxy. The official English Jewry is Orthodox, but there is a considerable element among the English Jews for whom the official British Judaism is not sufficiently Orthodox. Now, when Reform Judaism in England has separated itself it has given an impetus to the old desire of the right wing of British Jewry to create an England Jewish Orthodoxy. In this manner the official English Judaism will become a sort of middle party between Reform and Orthodoxy and may in time turn into what is called ‘conservative.’ At any rate, British Judaism ceases to be of one color.”
An estate valued at more than $1,000,000 was left by Moses Goldenberg. department store proprietor of Baltimore, Md. He was 79 years old.
By his will, probated in the Orphans’ Court, he bequeathed $1,000 to Rabbi William Rosenau, of the Eutaw Place Temple, and $500 to Rabbi Jacob Schuman, cantor of the temple. Two thousand dollars was left to the Jewish cemetery in which Mr. Goldenberg’s parents were buried.
Several bequests were made to attendants at railroad stations in Baltimore and Washington.
