Former Jewish Agency for Israel chairman Simcha Dinitz has been fined approximately $13,000 after being found guilty of billing the agency for charges on a personal credit card.
In announcing the fine, a Jerusalem district court judge stressed the seriousness of the offenses, which were fraud and breach of trust.
At the same time, he rejected the prosecution’s request for a prison term.
Dinitz said after the sentencing that he was considering appealing the fine.
A former Israeli ambassador to the United States, Dinitz assumed his agency post in December 1987.
He was forced to take a leave of absence from the agency in February 1994 amid allegations that he had charged thousands of dollars of personal expenses to the agency.
Dinitz resigned in January 1995.
