Arthur Szyk, Polish artist, was honored at a testimonial dinner given by the Federation of Polish Jews in America at the Delmonico Hotel last night.
Speakers included Z. Tygel, executive director of the Federation Roman Kwiecien of the Polish consulate; Herman Bernstein, editor of the Jewish Daily Bulletin; M. Kwapiszewski, counsellor in the Polish consulate in New York; Dr. Henry Szoszkies, representative of the Jewish Cooperative Banks in Warsaw, and Dr. Alexander Mukdoni of the Jewish Morning Journal.
Szyk, accompanied by his wife, was paid a tribute for his “great genius, great personality and great patriotism as both a Jew and a Pole.” A long list of notables, including Governor Herbert H. Lehman, Dr. Mieczyslaw Marchlewski, consul general from Poland, and Rabbi Stephen S. Wise, in communications expressing regret at inability to be present, sent greetings in which Szyk was praised.
In his letter Governor Lehman wrote as follows:
“I greatly appreciate the invitation and do sincerely wish it were possible for me to participate in this very deserved tribute to Mr. Szyk.”
Rabbi Wise wrote:
“I have as you know the very greatest admiration for Mr. Szyk as artist and man, but unfortunately an out-of-town engagement will make it impossible for me to return before midnight.”
