Max A. Braude, director-general of ORT, arrived today to begin a one-month coast-to-coast “report to the American Jewish community.” Mr. Braude will participate in discussions with the Joint Distribution Committee and with officials of American ORT concerning the financing of training programs conducted by ORT in 19 countries.

“The most urgent needs overseas today are in Israel and France,” Mr. Braude stated. “One hundred and twenty thousand Algerian Jews in France are in a desperate situation. Conditions are worst among the youth. Everything must be done to salvage this generation. All ORT schools in France have expanded to admit hundreds of these newcomers. But the need is to enroll thousands more.”

Mr. Braude heads the overseas operations of 600 ORT trade schools and other technical and vocational services in Europe, Israel, North Africa, Iran and other areas. Recently, he represented ORT at a Peace Corps sponsored conference of delegates from 40 nations concerned with middle-level manpower training. He is also presently serving as coordinator of a newly formed technical institute in West Africa, which is being financed by the Agency for International Development and administered by ORT.
