Professor Leopold Jessner, the famous chief director of the Berlin State Theatre, will definitely retire from his post by the end of March.
Leopold Jessner who is a Jew, has held his position for the past 13 years with great distinction. He was recently suspended from his position, following bitter attacks against him by the Nazi press, as part of their campaign against Jews holding posts in German cultural institutions. Although Professor Jessner had not been reinstated, he was, nevertheless still formally a state servant. His retirement is now certain owing to the fact that his contract terminates at the end of March and is not to be renewed.
