Two hundred and sixty-seven cities in the United States and nine in Canada have organized central agencies for the planning and financing of Jewish welfare programs, according to the 1942 Directory compiled by the Council of Jewish Federations and Welfare Funds. These communities comprise about 94 percent of the estimated Jewish population in the United States and 85 percent of the Jewish population of Canada.
