Disappointment is felt by all liberal circles here at the spirit in which the Anglo-American conference on refugees is proceeding in Bermuda.
In an editorial today the Manchester Guardian expresses astonishment that even in the formal speeches at the opening session of the conference, the leaders of the British and American delegations found it necessary to completely ignore the Jewish side of the Nazi persecutions although the conference “sprung from the horrors of the Nazi extermination of the Jews.”
In a statement published in the London Times today. Major Victor Cazalet, commenting on the Bermuda Conference in behalf of the National Committee for Rescue from Nazi Terror, asks: “Was it necessary to send three ministers to Bermuda only to repeat the well-worn phrases so familiar to the front benches of Parliament? We are convinced that if the conference breaks up without having initiated immediate measures of rescue on a scale not wholely inadequate, there will be a mounting wave of indignation in Britain which may surprise those who failed to appreciate how deeply the public conscience has been stirred and how determined our people are upon action.”
