Rabbi Milton Steinberg in his sermon before the Park Avenue Synagogue, 50 East 87th street, analyzed the Puritan and pagan attitudes and declared that the Jewish tradition is sympathetic to neither. “Judaism has no ascetic attitude toward the body,” he declared, “but neither does it sympathize with sensuality. Judaism teaches the sanctification of the instincts, the turning of them toward ideal ends.”
