Jewish members of the dissolved Jerusalem municipal council said today that they would refuse to cooperate with the inquiry commission named to probe the administrative machinery of the city, until they were reinstated in their posts.
In a letter to the Acting High Commissioner, the Jewish councillors also protested the charges by Jerusalem District Commissioner James Pollock that they had refused to accept the proposal for rotation of the mayoralty, the dispute over which precipitated the dissolution of the council. At the same time, the Arab councillors issued a statement denying that they had agreed to any part of the rotation plan. Meanwhile, the five-man British commission named to administer the city’s affairs began work today.
The Arab chamber of commerce in Jaffa has sent a memorandum to various Arab governments, to Abdul Rahman Azzam Bey, Secretary general of the Pan-Arab League, to Mussa el Alami, Palestine “representative” in the league, and to the Palestine Arab chamber of commerce, warning against the menace of Jewish industries in Palestine and “the economic and political penetration of Zionism in Palestine and the Middle East,” the Cairo radio said today.
