The Stuttgart radio today reported that displaced Jews in camps in Germany have called a twenty-four hour hunger strike in protest against the statement made by British Foreign Minister Ernest Bevin with regard to Palestine.
Reports reaching here from the British zone indicate that conditions of displaced Jews in the Belsen camp are very bad. There are about 11,000 Jews in the camp and practically all of them are in great need of winter clothing, underwear and shoes, particularly since their barracks are not heated because of lack of fuel.
In the American zone, the situation of the displaced Jews has improved in some camps, but not in all, it was charged here today by leaders of the Central Jewish Committee, representative body of the displaced Jews.
While in the Feldafing area Germans have been removed from houses to make room for Jewish DP’s, this is not true in the area where the Landsberg camp is located. The feed situation became worse recently, after military authorities issued an order prohibiting UNRRA from securing fresh foodstuffs from Germans, insisting that the camps must use canned foods only, which are provided by the army.
