Distrust is harming the recent rapprochement between Israel and the Palestinian Authority, a U.N. official said. “The doubts and suspicions on both sides may be understandable, but they need to be addressed through constructive engagement and sustained bilateral contacts,” Kieran Prendergast, U.N. undersecretary for political affairs, told the Security Council on Wednesday in its regular monthly briefing on the Middle East. He called on the Palestinian Authority to rein in terrorists and on Israel to “do more to support the Palestinian leadership in its difficult task.”
