Donald Oberdorfer, well-known communal leader of Atlanta, Georgia, has been named national chairman of the Joint Defense Appeal, it was announced today by Henry Monsky, president of B’nai B’rith, and Joseph M. Proskauer, president of the American Jewish Committee.
The announcement was made on behalf of the Committee of Six, governing body of the Joint Defense Appeal, which is now launching its 1946 national campaign for 25,000,000 to maintain the program of the American Jewish Committee and the Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B’rith in their fight against anti-Semitism. The current drive as the sixth since the inception of the Joint Defense Appeal in 1941.
As national chairman, Mr. Oberdorfer will head the appeal among welfare funds in all Jewish communities throughout the United States, except New York and Chicago, where separate campaigns will be conducted. Mr. Monsky and Mr. Proskauer in a joint statement hailed Mr. Oberdorfer for his acceptance of the chairmanship and they acclaimed him as “eminently fitted to strengthen the Joint Defense Appeal in a phase of its activities that urgently requires bolstering.”
