Realization of this situation, the Herald informant said, would in all probability swing the Nazi regime toward Communism. To avert this extreme result, the Reichswehr under General von Blomberg will proclaim a military dictatorship and declare martial law, he declared.
“The next steps,” the Kaiser spokesman predicted, “would end the Nazi repressions, restore Germany to the League of Nations and re-establish the nation’s commercial credit.”
This program, he then said, would ultimately result in the restoration of the Hohenzollern monarchy at some time before the end of the winter.
The von Papen speech that has brought the German crisis to a head was characterized by the spokesman as having delighted the Kaiser without surprising him.
