The formation of an organization called American Friends of the Middle East, with Miss Dorothy Thompson as chairman, we announced here during the weekend. Miss Thompson said she believed that the United States was jeopardizing its interests and those of the Middle East as a whole by giving “special preference” to Israel.
“The forming and proclamation of the State of Israel in Palestine towards the end of the mandate period, ostensibly supported by the United States of America, has complicated the situation considerably,” Miss Thompson said in the statement issued. “This — and the presence of nearly 1,000,000 Arab refugees from Israel in the surrounding Arab states — has contributed to further deterioration of western relations with large parts of this area.”
