Moshe Douek, the young Israeli who threw a hand grenade at the Cabinet bench in Israel’s Parliament last week. is legally sane and can stand trial for attempted murder, a report of two psychiatrists declared today.
Today’s report contradicts a decision a year ago by a commission of psychiatrists which ruled that Douek was not fit to face trial for an attempt to set fire to Beilmson Hospital in Tel Aviv. Douek was under observation since last Wednesday.
The Cabinet named a Ministerial committee today to plan security arrangements to prevent further attacks on the Knesset such as last week’s grenade bombing by Douek. Speaker of the Knesset Joseph Sprinzak has named a Parliamentary commission of inquiry, headed by Israel Bar Yehuda, Minister for Interior, and including representatives of various parties to investigate the bombing.
Meanwhile, a bulletin from Hadassah Hospital where three of Douek’s victims remain, said that Moshe Shapira, Minister of Health and most seriously hurt of five Ministers wounded by the exploding projectile, continued to show improvement. Premier David Ben Gurion, from whose leg a steel grenade splinter was removed earlier this week-end, and Minister of Transport Moshe Carmel, whose arm was shattered by the blast, are both improving.
