A new method of processing displaced persons, which would guarantee that all eligible Jewish DP’s will arrive in the United States before the existing DP Immigration Act terminates on June 30, 1951, is now being considered by the DP Commission, it was reported here today by Max Neumann, codirector of the HIAS-JDC Coordinating Committee on DP immigration to the United States from Germany.
Mr. Neumann said that a plan advanced by him and James Norris, European director of the National Catholic Welfare Council, calls for an immediate classification of DP’s on the basis of eligibility, family status, former job, skill, and security risk. This would create “pools” from which “immediate deliveries” of DP’s would be made to sponsors in America. Under the present system, the sponsor is first obtained, and then a DP to fit the request is sought and processed.
