Displaced persons in the American and British zones of Germany will be maintained on the same basis as Germans, from the German economy, according to the terms of the Anglo-American agreement for economic fusion of the two zones, signed today by Secretary of State Byrnes and British Foreign Secretary Bevin.
The preferential treatment accorded displaced persons in the American zone will however, be continued. The agreement specified “that supplementary rations and other benefits which may be provided for displaced persons in excess of those available to German citizens must be brought into Germany without cost to the German economy.”
Assistant Secretary of State John H. Hilldring, who concluded the agreement for the United States, said that this country will find means outside the agreement to supplement the food given displaced persons in the American zone. This means that DP’s other than persecutees will continue to receive 2,000 calories a day, and that persecutees will receive 2,200 daily, as compared with the 1,550 given Germans.
