The primary objective of the Jewish Theological Seminary’s semi-centennial celebration is to bring about “a deeper realization of the true place of both Biblical and Rabbinical Judaism in human thought, Dr. Cyrus Adler, president of the seminary, declared today in a statement at the first press conference he has ever given. The celebration opens tomorrow night with a meeting at which Gov. Lehman will be the principal speaker.
He told Jewish newspapermen at a luncheon in his seminary office that in arranging the semi-centennial he had in mind “the use of this institution as a means for the promotion of traditional Judaism in the United States and for dispelling the widespread ignorance about Judaism, primarily among our own people but also among others.”
Dr. Adler declared that “the most important task that faces us and every other section of the American people is that of building up the character of our young people.” He added that “no group of people can afford to overlook this problem of the character education of its children, but least of all the Jews can do so, for our whole significance in human life depends on our ethical standards.”
