Dr. Alfred Hirschberg, executive director of the United Jewish Campaign here and representative of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency in Brazil was the recipient today of congratulations from numerous Jewish organizations in this country and abroad on the occasion of his 60th birthday which will be observed tomorrow.
Tribute to Dr. Hirschberg’s services in Brazil and in pre-war Europe was paid in articles in a special edition of the “Chronica Israelita” published here. Dr. Hirschberg, who was held by the Nazis in the notorious Sachsenhausen concentration camp in 1938, came to Brazil in 1940 and became director of the Congregacao Israelita Paulista. He later held the posts of executive director of Keren Hayesod and secretary of the Joint Distribution Committee in Brazil. He was also secretary of the Friends of the Hebrew University in Sao Paub.
Prior to his settling in Brazil, Dr. Hirschberg was one of the leaders of the Central Verein of the Jews in Germany, leading representative body of German Jewry. He was also the editor of the CV-Zeitung, official organ of this organization. He received his doctorate at the University of Leipzig in 1927 and is the author of a number of works.
