Dr. Leo Baeck, president of the World Union for Progressive Judaism, arrived here today by air from London at the invitation of the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, where he will lecture as visiting professor. The 75-year-old rabbi plans to devote the remaining years of his life to furthering Liberal Judaism in the United States.
Declaring that he hopes to become a U.S. citizen some day, Dr. Baeck said: “America is the center of Jewish life and studies. The center has shifted from Europe. There are now two centers. Palestine and the United States, and the currents are strong between them, I cannot see a future for Judaism without Israel, but neither can I see such a future without the United States.”
The Hon. Lily H. Montagu, honorary secretary of the World Union, arrived over the weekend from England to address the convention of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, which will be held in Boston next week. Miss Montagu has served as lay preacher and leader of the Central Liberal Jewish Congregation in London.
