Dr. Cyrus Adler, president of the American Jewish Committee, and Dropsie College and the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, has signed a statement endorsing Franklin D. Roosevelt for president.
The statement declares that Roosevelt is the best fitted man for the presidency of the United States because “he has shown that he has the courage to look the facts in the face and he realizes the gravity of the crisis which confronts the country.”
The election of Roosevelt as president is necessary, the statement says, because he is the man best qualified to put the country back on its feet economically. Roosevelt will secure the repeal of the 18th Amendment; he will introduce a new tariff policy which will restore America’s foreign trade; and he will carry out an adequate relief program for the unemployed, the statement points out, adding:
“Governor Roosevelt has been all his life in close contact with the life of America and with American institutions. He has demonstrated his ability to cooperate with the legislative bodies. Without such cooperation it is impossible for our system of government to function successfully.”
In addition to Dr. Adler, twenty-seven other noted citizens of Philadelphia signed the statement. Among the signatories are the following names of well known Philadelphia Jews: Philip W. Amram, James E. Cowen, Dr. Solomon Solis-Cohn and Frank Samuel.
