Rabbi Maurice N, Eisendrath, of Toronto, has been elected director of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, for the duration of the war, it was announced here today by Adolph Rosenberg, chairman of the executive board of the Union.
In accepting the call to head the Union, Rabbi Eisendrath, a leader of Canadian Jewry, declared: “The most significant task in Jewry today is to sustain and strengthen the traditional citadel of our faith, the Synagogue. I say this in full recognition of the many other consuming labors which confront us in the embattled household of Israel; the rescuing of our perishing brethren from their many houses of bondage, the upbuilding of Zion and the reconstruction of our Jewish life in so many regions of the earth. But above all, it must be remembered that it is ‘by the spirit’ that Israel shall prevail.”
