Dr. William Filderman, leader of the Jews in Rumania and former president of the Union of Jewish Communities there, was arrested today in Bucharest on orders from Premier Ion Antonescu, Nazi radio stations reported. He will be sent to forced labor in a concentration camp, the broadcast said. (The OWI also reported Dr. Filderman’s arrest, quoting DNB.)
Dr. Filderman was apprehended by the police after he succeeded in eluding them for several days, the radio annouced. He is charged with urging Jews not to pay the special “Jewish tax” which the Rumanian government recently imposed upon the Jewish population. Because of his poor health. Dr. Filderman will be examined by a state doctor prior to being deported to the camp. the Nazi broadcast stated.
Rumanian newspapers reaching here today report that the authorities in Rumania have ordered the arrest of all members of the government committee in the city of Jassy which assigns Jews to forced labor. The committee is charged with embezzlement of government funds.
