Dr. Hans Globke, controversial State Secretary in charge of the office of Chancellor Konrad Adenauer, officially retired today–although he will continue to work at his post until the Chancellor himself retires, on October 15. Dr. Globke reached the mandatory retirement age of 65 last month.
Dr. Globke has been repeatedly accused–and has just as consistently denied–of collaboration with Hitler in the drafting of the infamous Nuremberg Laws, setting the Nazi regime’s racist policy against Jews. Dr. Adenauer has refused to dismiss him. Dr. Globke had insisted that all he did was to write a legal commentary on the Nuremberg Laws and that, in fact, he had helped ease the interpretation of those laws.
